Voting

Registration:  To participate in an election in Malden, you must be registered to vote in the city.  Anyone who meets three basic criteria can register.  The criteria are:

  1. You are a citizen of the United States;
  2. You wll be 18 years old on or before election day; and
  3. You are a Malden resident.

You can register in person or by mail.  Click here to download a voter registration form in English, Spanish or Chinese.  Mail-in voter registration forms are also  available at a variety of public agencies, including the Registry of Motor Vehicles and  the Department of Transitional Assistance.  Please note that, to vote in a particular election, you must be registered at least 20 days prior to the election.

Once you are registered, you will remain registered as long as you continue to vote and/or return the annual street listing form sent to you by the Registrar of Voters.  If you move, you may need to reregister.  Contact the City Clerk's Office for additional information.

Where to vote:  The city is divided into 16 precincts, each with a specific voting location, or polling place.  To determine where you should go to vote, click here

If you can't go to the polls: If you will be out of town on election day, if you are physically disabled or if your religous beliefs prevent you from voting in person on election day, you may want to vote by absentee ballot. 

To apply for an absentee ballot, click here to download an application.  Please note that an application for an absentee ballot cannot be made online.  The application must be completed and mailed or delivered to our office. 

Special State Election

To vote in the Special State Election for United States Senator, you must be registered by June 5, 2013.  The City Clerk's Office will remain open for voter registration until 8 p.m. on June 5th. 

The Special State Election will be held on June 25, 2013.  Polls will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.  To view the ballot for the Special State Election, click here

2013 City Election Schedule

The City will hold elections for Ward Councillor, Councillor At Large and School Committee Member in 2013.  Following is a schedule of important dates for candidates and voters:

June 18                      Nomination papers available from the City Clerk's Office

July 25                        5:00 P.M. last day and hour to obtain nomination papers from the City Clerk's Office (53:9A)

July 30                        5:00 P.M. last day and hour to submit nomination papers to the Registrar of Voter's Office for certification (53:7)

August 13                   5:00 P.M. last day and hour to file certified nomination papers with the City Clerk's Office (53:10)

August 15                   5:00 P.M. last day and hour for filing withdrawals from nomination for the preliminary or objections to nomination (55B:7; 53:13)

August 28                   8:00 P.M. close of registration for the preliminary (51:26)

Sept. 10                      5:00 P.M. first campaign finance statement due (55:18)

Sept. 17                      PRELIMINARY

Sept. 23                      5:00 P.M. last day and hour to withdraw from nomination at the preliminary or petition for a recount of votes.54:135; 206/02)
