The Human Rights Commission was established by city ordinance to increase community and governmental awareness of the rights of all residents, regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, sex, age, ancestry, physical, mental or emotional capability, sexual preference or marital status. The Commission is empowered to receive complaints relative to violation of human rights, to initiate investigations into matters under its jurisdiction and to mediate disputes involving alleged human rights violations.
