Mayor's Housing Task Force

Telephone: (781) 397-7030

Overview
Created in 1996 under the leadership of Mayor Richard C. Howard, the Mayor's Housing Task Force takes advantage of Chapter 111, Section 1271 of the Massachsuetts General Laws which provides the opportunity to inspect problem residential and commercial properties throughout the City. The City with the cooperation of the local court exercises this housing receivership law only after it has exhausted all other avenues with egregious properties that have a long history of code violations and oftentimes numerous public safety complaints.

The Task Force unites in a common goal the efforts of the Mayor's Office, the Malden Redevelopment Authority, Inspectional Services Department, the Malden Police and Fire Deparrtments, the Board of Health, along with the Assessor's and Tax Collector's office to eliminate blight in the neighborhoods. Cooperative  property owners work hand-in-hand with the City to return the home to proper standards. The  MRA also offers low-interest loans to assist with renovations.

To report a  nuisance property, contact Inspectional Services Department (781) 397-7030.

Items that may signal a troubled or nuisance property:

  • Unregistered cars.
It is illegal to store an unregistered car on  your property.
  • An unusually large number of tenants residing in a home.
This could mean that the property has been subdivided into illegal apartments.
  • Abandoned homes.
Properties that appear abandoned or vacant should be reported to the Task Force.
