The Mayor and his staff respond to resident inquiries and issues concerning all aspects of City government. The Office is also the headquarters for business strategy and development as well as communicating about the activities of City government utilizing technology to provide more efficient and improved service to the public. The city’s website is maintained from within the Mayor’s Office and the Mayor’s Youth Employment Program and Fire Relief Fund are also administered from this office.

Mayor Gary ChristensonAs the Chief Executive Officer of the City of Malden, Mayor Christenson oversees a budget of $155 million and a staff of 1,300 employees across a variety of departments. The Mayor also serves as Chairperson of the Malden School Committee. Elected in November 2011, Mayor Christenson was sworn in January 2, 2012 to serve Malden's diverse population in a four year term. The Mayor and his staff respond to resident inquiries and issues concerning all aspects of City government. Among the Mayor’s goals for Malden are increased communication with Malden's diverse population about the activities of City government, utilizing technology to provide more efficient and improved service to the public, customer friendly delivery of services to constituents, excellence in education, quality public safety, and the revitalization of downtown Malden.
 

Mayor Christenson's Staff

Ron Cochran, Director of Online Services and Communication Technology

Ron is a graduate of Malden High School and a Malden resident. He and his wife are raising three children all of whom attend the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School. Ron has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Northeastern University and a Master's Degree in Information Technology from Bentley University.

He brings over 15 years of experience in the Information Technology industry to the City of Malden. Most recently Ron worked at Royal Philips Electronics as a Business Systems Analyst. He has been a web developer and internet consultant for 10 years and specializes in Social Media, Search Engine and Conversion Rate Optimization and User Experience. Kevin Duffy, Strategy & Business Development Officer

Kevin, the son of Brendan and Elaine Duffy, was born and raised in Malden and is a graduate of Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1986. He has an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a Master of Business Administration from Saint Joseph’s College in Maine.

Kevin has proven to be a versatile operations professional with myriad experience in business, government, and non-profits (more than twenty years) and is also the former Executive Director of Healthy Malden. Kathleen Manning Hall, Chief Administrative Officer

Kathleen is a 25 year resident of Ward 1 in Malden where she resides with her husband John, a Lieutenant on the Malden Fire Department, and their three children Alyssa, Julia and Jake. While raising her children, Kathleen worked for more than 25 years in the private sector, most recently as a legal assistant/paralegal for the past 18 years at the Boston law firm of Looney & Grossman LLP.

Long active in addressing and resolving issues in her neighborhood as well as citywide, and at Cheverus School, where her children are and have been students, Kathleen has a substantial knowledge of the Malden community. Kathleen has also been involved with a number of organizations outside of Malden, including The Second Step which is a comprehensive program for survivors of domestic violence. Kathleen brings to her new job organizational and management skills acquired from management in political organizations and campaigns at both the national and local levels. Paul Hammersley, Online Services and Communications Specialist

Paul is a lifelong resident of the City of Malden and graduate of Malden High School class of 1985.  He has two children and one grandchild.  Paul's father Arnold Hammersley is a retired Captain from the Malden Fire Department and his mother Margaret worked in the City Clerk's office.

Paul is a lover of all things media.  Paul brings a wealth of experience in the media arts to the job.  As a sound and vocal engineer, he has produced music for local artists and his photography skills can be seen all throughout the city on various media outlets.  He views videography and video production as his specialty and will utilize his talents to bring a richer media experience to constituents concerning city government. Paul can be reached at phammersley@cityofmalden.org or by calling 781-397-7000.

Karen Colón Hayes, Community Outreach Manager/Coordinator

Karen has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychiatry from the State University of New York At Albany and attended Simmons Graduate School of Social Work, Boston. She has over 20 years work experience in the Human Services field with experience ranging from Family Services and Psychiatry Research to Youth-at-Risk work. Karen is a founding officer of a non-profit community organization in Malden, Friends of Oak Grove, Inc. (FOOGI). She has been actively involved in her community since she chose Malden for her home in 1989. She serves on the Malden Cultural Council, has been a City Year volunteer, Girl Scout Troop Leader and volunteers at numerous Malden citywide events. Yan Yu, Constituent Services Representative

Yan looked at Malden for her place of residence in 2010 because it offered affordable living options with convenient transportation but she made it her home because of the friendly community atmosphere. Before coming to America, she received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Communication and Masters in Communication at Wuhan University in China, while working her way through school at Chinese Central Television in Beijing. She is currently a graduate student in Journalism at Emerson College.

Yan loves reading, writing, and communicating with people of different cultural and social backgrounds. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and is a skilled writer in both Chinese and English. Prior to coming to work in the Christenson Administration, she interned at Somerville Journal, Wicked Local.com, and currently is a freelancer for Phoenix Weekly, an international magazine in Beijing. Yan also dedicates her spare time as a volunteer at MATV.
