The Human Services Department includes the Malden Council on Aging, and Human Services. This department is located in The John and Christina Markey Malden Senior Community Center, 7 Washington Street. Human Services provides programs and services to the senior population of Malden for the body, mind and spiri.  Human Services also oversees several grants to help individuals and families in emergency financial situations.

The Malden Council on Aging is located in The John and Christina Markey Malden Senior Community Center. The Council on Aging provides programs, services and activities for Malden’s mature population. Exercise programs are in place to increase flexibility and prevent injury, education programs to increase knowledge and understanding to take control of personal health care and entertainment programs to increase socialization and decrease isolation. A wide variety of programs are created for the mind, body and spirit, helping seniors live longer, safer and healthier in their own community. The Mayor and City Council made this large investment for the seniors of this community and are committed to keeping it a viable and rich resource.
 
The Malden Council on Aging provides Malden senior residents with a FREE transportation program to medical appointments, food shopping and a shuttle service to the Senior Community Center. Malden senior residents can call the office and make an appointment. We provide door-to-door service to medical appointments in Malden, Medford, Melrose and Stoneham. Shopping trips to Stop & Shop on Charles Street, Malden and Johnny’s Foodmaster on Salem Street, Medford are provided on a weekly basis and shopping trips to the Meadow Glen Mall are provided once a month. The shuttle service to the Senior Community Center is provided only Tuesdays and Thursdays when senior residents can be picked up at their home and taken to the Senior Community Center. Senior residents can eat lunch, attend a movie, play bingo or participate in any number of other activities scheduled for those days. Park schedules are maintained by and permits for park use are granted by calling Bob Rotondi (781) 322-1112.
 
Human Services – The Human Services Department manages funds from United Way (Food and Shelter Funds) for "Other Shelter". "Other Shelter" is described as a short stay (1 week or less) in a hotel, motel or not-for-profit shelter. Individuals must be residents of Middlesex County to apply for these emergency funds.
 
Also managed in the Human Services Department is a City Council Fire Relief Fund. Neighbors must notify their City Councillor to access these funds. Typically, a $500 disbursement is made to help with rent, clothing, food, furniture, etc. for a family that has been displaced by fire. For more information, call Jeanne L. Benoit (781) 397-7144.


Events: Winter and Summer Senior Dances are held each year. The Human Services Department also provides assistance with the Mayor's Annual Senior Cookout.
