3. What can be done about lead service lines and who is responsible

Presently, Malden has approximately 3,000 lead water pipes out of 12,000 delivering water to properties. The City will be developing a program for the replacement of the lead water pipes in the street and will work with property owners to determine if a lead water line is present on private property and the best way to replace it.

If a homeowner owns a lead service line, the homeowner is responsible for costs associated with replacing the lead line on their property however residents are encouraged to check our "4. Find resources to help eliminate lead in drinking water" page to check the most current programs available for financial assistance.
