Groundbreaking on Redevelopment of former McFadden Manor Site

Tuesday, August 2, 2016

Mayor Gary Christenson recently participated with Volunteers of America (VOA) President and CEO Thomas Bierbaum, State Representative Paul Donato, City Council President Barbara Murphy, local elected and City officials and residents for a groundbreaking ceremony at the longtime vacant City-run nursing home known as McFadden Manor. To be constructed on the 2.6 acre site will be the Forestdale Park Assisted Living & Memory Care Facility which will consist of 80 units of high quality housing in a family-like environment. The facility will include studio and one bedroom apartments for assisted living, an 18 bed Memory Support Unit, and will offer residents a multitude of services and supports based on each resident’s needs. The estimated private investment in the project is $28 Million and expected completion is in October of 2017.

It was the intention of the City and of the Malden Redevelopment Authority to maintain the historical significance of the building which will be restored and preserved by Developer VOA. The site was once well known as the Malden “poor-farm” which provided food to those who lived on the farm. In 1955, the farm evolved into the City run McFadden Manor Nursing Home. The nursing home closed in 2009 and fell into disrepair. “Not only will this project serve members of our community similar to the way that McFadden Manor did for many decades, it will preserve a historical Malden site,” said Mayor Christenson. “I’m grateful to State Representative Paul Donato, City Council President Barbara Murphy and MRA Executive Director Deborah Burke for their committed determination in bringing this project to fruition.”

Project Developer VOA is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving those most in need, especially the vulnerable, and those facing multiple challenges. VOA provides comprehensive programs for veterans, at-risk youth, adults and youth in recovery from addition, elders and those in need of mental health treatment. NEI General Contracting of Randolph is the contractor. The project is being managed by the Malden Redevelopment Authority on behalf of the City. Weekly construction updates regarding progress will be posted on the City of Malden Facebook page at
