Malden Library Area

Library Neighborhood

The area surrounding the Malden Public Library is one of the oldest remaining residential neighborhoods with a variety of architectural styles. There are early colonial homes located at 23 and 38 Park Street, 56 Spring Street and on Salem Street (known as "Shoemaker's Row"). One of the homes was built between 1796-1800 and jointly owned by Esra Holden and John Sprague (Town Surveyor, 1678). Other interesting structures in the area are located at 18 Sprague Street, a small mansard; 32 and 40 Sprague Street, Greek Revival homes (with modern additions) and 27 Sprague Street, with a Victorian "Painted Lady."
