Malden Reads Opening Ceremony

Monday, March 6, 2017

Mayor Gary Christenson recently attended the Malden Reads Opening Celebration held at the Malden Public Library. The event included a tour of the Library’s Ryder Gallery and featured refreshments, cultural exhibits and conversation about this year’s book selection “A Man called Ove” by Fredrik Backman. The story is about Ove, an ill-tempered 59 year old man who is despondent about the loss of his beloved wife and angry about being forced into retirement from his longtime job. He spends his days visiting his wife’s grave and despite being removed as the chairman of his townhouse Neighborhood Association, continues daily to enforce the Association’s rules. A boisterous young family moves in next door and a homeless cat attaches itself to him and, in spite of himself, unexpected friendships form that will come to alter Ove’s outlook on life.

Malden Reads, a City-wide reading program organized by community groups, City leaders and residents in collaboration with the Malden Public Library and Malden Access Television aims to encourage reading and promote community participation.
