Malden’s Promise provides the City, schools and the community organizations of Malden with a supportive network to communicate, collaborate, share resources and provide opportunities for youth. During monthly meetings, Malden’s Promise members worked to determine the issues which they deemed to have contributed to the drop-out rate. They found that mental health and substance abuse were often factors as well a lack of connection to adult advocates. The absence of students’ awareness of and access to community resources was also problematic. The solutions put in place included professional development surrounding issues of mental health and offering case management to students in need. The implementation of the “Graduation Guru” campaign where adult advocates tutor and help struggling students has been another successful solution. To further their reach to students, a web app for Malden's community resources was developed and is easily obtained using any smartphone at Http://mobile.dudamobile.com/site/lookingaroundmalden.
