Open Space and Recreation Committee

In January of 2017, Mayor Gary Christenson announced an 11 member committee to assist the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) in updating the City of Malden Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP) which was last updated in 2009 and covered the period of 2009-2016. The Committee consisted of residents, City departments responsible for overseeing and maintaining parks, and representatives of organizations and community groups.

The City needs an open space and recreation plan in order to continue to qualify for grants. The plan, which will cover a seven-year period, serves as a blueprint for ensuring that current and future residents have ample opportunities for recreation and access to open space. The task of the Committee was to determine the City’s park and recreational assets and gather feedback to help guide the City in its future planning. MAPC's work included an inventory of conservation and recreation spaces, the development of goals and objectives, and a community visioning process. The project was administered by the Malden Redevelopment Authority.

In addition to public meetings of the Committee and information members collected, there were also two public forums held and a survey conducted. The Committee is now working on a draft plan with the materials and information compiled. The working document may be viewed in the Malden Redevelopment Office at 17 Pleasant Street, 3rd Floor.
