Important Amendment to City's Snow/Ice Removal Ordinance The City Council recently voted in favor of an amendment to the City's Snow/Ice Removal Ordinance that will require the removal of all snow and ice from all properties in the City. Prior to this amendment, the removal of snow and ice only applied to businesses and four-family homes and above. B. Removal of hazardous conditions shall be made within the first twenty four hours after such snow or ice accumulates on said sidewalk. Sidewalks shall be cleared to provide a minimum passage of thirty six inches in width. A minimum passage of thirty six inches in width shall also be cleared to the street. Handicapped access ramps shall be cleared to the full extent of the width and length of the main slope and side slopes. C. Violation of this ordinance may be enforced in the manner provided under M.G.L. Chapter 40, Section 21D in accordance with the following schedule of fines: Each twenty four hour period during which a violation shall exist shall constitute a separate offense, for which a separate and additional fine may be imposed. The City is compiling a list of people who would be interested in charging a reasonable fee for snow removal services. The list will be distributed to residents who need assistance in complying with the new ordinance. Residents and service providers will make their own arrangements relative to scope of work, time of performance fees and payment.
