The Pleasant Street Downtown Center Improvements Project is a roadway restoration and streetscape improvements project proposed for the Central Business District (CBD) of downtown Malden. The project extends from Main Street to the Malden Government Center at 200 Pleasant Street. The existing Pleasant Street roadway consists of cement concrete pavement which will undergo restoration repairs and “diamond grinding” to create a new wearing surface. The existing brick sidewalks on either side of Pleasant Street will undergo restoration. Cracked areas will be repaired, joints sealed and the whole sidewalk power washed. Existing wheelchair ramps within the project limits will be fully reconstructed in cement concrete to meet current ADA/AAB regulations and the existing Pleasant Street roadway lighting will be removed and replaced with new decorative LED street lighting. Except for new light pole locations, existing light pole foundations and electrical conduit will be reused. New street furniture will be installed along Pleasant Street, including pedestrian benches, landscape planters, bicycle racks, trash receptacles and an ornamental clock. New sidewalk trees will also be planted and new ADA compliant tree grates will be installed at sidewalk tree pits. Green initiatives associated with the project include the installation of rain gardens and hooded catch basins. All work is being proposed with the goal of minimizing disruption to the CBD downtown businesses along Pleasant Street during construction of the improvements and, with maintaining access for all project abutters.
Mass. Department of Transportation is overseeing this federally-funded project. Newport Construction of Nashua, N.H. is the general contractor.
