School Closings and Emergency Notifications

How will I be notified if the City of Malden declares a snow emergency?

There are several ways we will notify you of a snow emergency:

How will I be notified of school closings (Malden Public Schools)?

Malden Public Schools notify parents through the ConnectED Reverse Call system.  This is different than what the City of Malden uses for resident notifications.  If you or your child is registered in one of the Malden Public schools and your contact information is accurate on the school's registration records, you will be contacted as soon as a school cancelation is declared.  Additionally, school cancelations communicated with several media outlets including Malden Access Television and the major television networks.  Lastly, you can always monitor up-to-the minute cancelation information the City's Facebook and Twitter accounts at twitter.com/thecityofmalden and facebook.com/cityofmalden.

How will I be notified of school closings (Mystic Valley Regional Charter School)?

The Mystic Valley Regional Charter School is not goverened by the same body that determines local school cancelations.  You must look for notification from MVRCS School Administrators directly.  They use a similar reverse call system method as Malden Public schools.  If you have proper contact information registered with the school, you should recieve notification.  Once we are notified of a cancelation of MVRCS, we will also share this information on the City's Facebook and Twitter accounts at twitter.com/thecityofmalden and facebook.com/cityofmalden as a courtesy.

How will I be notified of school closings (Malden Catholic High School)?

Malden Catholic High School is not goverened by the same body that determines local school cancelations.  You must look for notification from Malden Catholic High School Administrators directly.   Once we are notified of a cancelation of Malden Catholic High School , we will also share this information on the City's Facebook and Twitter accounts at twitter.com/thecityofmalden and facebook.com/cityofmalden as a courtesy.

The City of Malden's Snow Operations

Our protocol for treating and maintaining roadways

When a winter storm is forecast, the City of Malden follows a protocol for treating and maintaining roadways. Keeping in mind that all winter storms vary in severity, the first step is that the Emergency Management Team meets and reviews several different weather reports including the Weather Sentry Service located at the DPW Control Center to formulate a plan for the incoming storm.

An anti-icing operation is begun one-to-two hours before the predicted storm by pretreating main streets and hills with a salt and calcium mix. Two DPW Supervisors are assigned at the start of the operation, one on the West side of the City and one on the East side to monitor both road conditions and illegally parked vehicles that may interfere with the operation. If the forecast calls for more than two inches of snow, a full plowing operation will be initiated. Depending on the severity and duration of the storm the operation may include over 70 pieces of equipment to keep streets, sidewalks and schools plowed and safe for travel.
