Cemetery Department - $15,000

About the Cemetery Department

The Cemetery Department is responsible for the operation of Forest Dale Cemetery on Forest Street and is charged with maintaining the Salem Street and Bell Rock cemeteries. Burials at Forest Dale Cemetery are restricted to persons who have been residents of Malden for five years at the time of their death.

This recommendation includes the investment of approximately $2.5M in our parks, including Callahan, Devir, Forestdale, and Miller Parks. Also, the plan is to follow through with the recommendation to pave the newly installed bike path and to continue improvements at Bell Rock Memorial Park and Fellsmere Pond. In addition, $250,000 is proposed to buyback streetlights from National Grid so that we can respond directly when there is an outage. Finally, a major investment of $11M is proposed in our roadways and sidewalks which will coincide with recent water main repairs.

About the Department of Public Works

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for a variety of City services including the collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste, snow removal, plowing and sanding, street sweeping, upkeep and repairs to sidewalks, streets, parks and trees. Traffic signalization, crosswalk maintenance and anti-graffiti efforts were integrated into the responsibilities of the DPW in Fiscal Year 2013.

Fire Department - $3,925,000

About the Fire Department

The goal of the Malden Fire Department is to prevent fires from occurring and to prevent related hazardous conditions from endangering the residents served. This is accomplished through community education initiatives and fire prevention code and regulation development and enforcement. The members of the Fire Department stand ready 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, to quickly and efficiently combat fire wherever and whenever it may occur and professionally mitigate all other emergency response incidents.

About Permits, Inspections and Planning Services

The Board of Health, Inspectional Services, Planning Department and Compliance Officers has been merged to become the new Permits, Compliance and Planning Services Office (PCPS). PCPS facilitates a streamlined process and provides improved and efficient customer service through technological upgrades, a coordinated effort of all departments, and the cross training of staffs. This “one stop” approach allows the public access to multiple city services and functions and ensures a more efficient planning, permitting and inspection process for both residential and business development.

Pine Banks Park - $200,000

About Pine Banks Park

Pine Banks Park is a 107.5 acre public park located in both Malden and Melrose. The park was bequeathed to the cities by the first Mayor of Malden, Elisha S. Converse in 1905 to be used by the cities jointly “forever as a public park.” Pine Banks Park is managed by a non-profit corporation comprised of a seven-member board of trustees from the two cities and includes a descendant of the Converse family.

Originally home to the Wompanoag Native American tribe, the park boasts rocky cliffs, a small shallow pond, hundreds of large evergreens and a beautiful walking trail. There is a playground area with picnic tables and BBQ facilities for families to enjoy. Pine Banks Park has recently undergone a sizable renovation and currently boasts five softball fields, a full size baseball field and a football field, with lighting for night games.

The Water Utilities Department is responsible for the oversight of the city’s drinking water and meets all regulations of U.S. and Massachusetts Environmental Protection Laws. The Department also maintains the infrastructure for the city’s water, sewer and fire protection systems and coordinates all data for monthly water billing.
