Construction Begins at Pleasant Street Parking Lot

Date: July 13, 2011

The reconstruction and expansion of the Pleasant Street surface parking lot is underway.  During the reconstruction period, the parking lot will be closed to all parkers. Alternative public parking on a short-term basis will be available to shoppers, visitors and diners during the reconstruction period at the following locations:

• Dartmouth Street Surface Lot
• Florence Street Surface Lot (Please note parking at this location is currently limited due to the ongoing rehab project at the Heritage Apartments)
• Metered lot on Main Street (next to Citizens Bank)
• CBD Garage, corner of Exchange, Centre and Middlesex Streets
• Jackson Street Parking Garage, corner of Jackson Street and Route 60
(Validated short-term parking is offered by several of the downtown establishments for their customers.)

The project will involve the creation of 38 permanent short-term parking spaces in the lot, the installation of pay-on-foot stations, a landscaping and beautification treatment that will include period lighting, flowers, trees, shrubs and wrought iron fencing. Additionally, 11 new on-street parking spaces will be created along Garnet Road and plans call for the discontinuance of Linden Avenue as a public street.

The construction project could take four months to complete. The City will insist that the contractor works to minimize the inconvenience to the businesses and residents and to minimize the disruption to businesses in the downtown area.

The Malden Redevelopment Authority is administering this construction project for and on behalf of the City of Malden. If you have any questions, please contact Deborah A. Burke, Assistant Executive Director, (781) 324-5720 or by email at dburke@maldenredevelopment.com.  This reconstruction effort and ongoing investment in the downtown is made possible with a federal grant secured by Congressman Edward J. Markey. The project is endorsed by Mayor Richard C. Howard and Ward Four Councillor James Nestor, whose ward includes Malden Square.
