    The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Malden Board of Health want residents to know that the risk of mosquito-borne illness is on the rise in Massachusetts.     The Malden Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold a recycling day for a variety of products including tires, televisions, computer monitors and car batteries on Saturday, October 16, 2010. Residents of Malden will be able to bring recyclable items to the DPW, located at 356 Commercial Street, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. (paint will be recycled between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.).     Since the institution of Malden’s Pay-as-You-Throw (PAYT) Program, recycling by residents across the City has increased dramatically--in fact by 75 percent. As a result of this overwhelming response, the Malden Department of Public Works (DPW) has run out of recycling bins and is currently waiting for a new shipment, which is on back order. In the meantime, residents can convert a container into a recycling bin by placing a “recycling” sticker or sign on that container. ... more

Howard and the American Red Cross are joining together to sponsor a blood drive on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at the Malden Government Center, Council Chamber, 3rd floor, 200 Pleasant Street.     The City of Malden Cemetery Board of Trustees has approved the construction of 120 double deep grave sites at the Forest Dale Cemetery. This project will begin within 60 days. The Board will pre-sell at least 50% of the sites using a lottery system. The Board of Trustees has set two restrictions for those wishing to participate in this lottery system.     The City of Malden has dedicated a new monument to its World War II Veterans. The monument, located at Bell Rock Memorial Park, Main and Wigglesworth Streets, contains the names of 8,139 Maldonians including the 239 who were killed in action. The City is keeping the last plaque open for 18 months in order to give the public ample time to review the monument for any name omissions or misspellings.     More than 1,000 persons gathered at Bell Rock Memorial Park Saturday morning for the dedication of Malden’s new citywide World War II monument. The monument contains the names of 8,139 persons who lived in Malden when they entered the service. Of that total, 239 of them were killed in action.
