Elected Officials

The City of Malden is governed by a Mayor-City Council system of government, one of the two most common forms of local government in the United States.

Mayor

The Mayor, the executive branch of Malden government is elected by the voters and serves a four-year term. The Mayor oversees a budget of $160 million and a staff of 1,300 employees across a variety of departments. The Mayor also serves as Chairperson of the Malden School Committee. The Mayor and his staff respond to resident inquiries and issues concerning all aspects of City government.

The Office is also the headquarters for business strategy and development as well as communicating about the activities of City government utilizing technology to provide more efficient and improved service to the public. The City's website is maintained from within the Mayor's Office and the Mayor's Youth Employment Program is administered from this office.

City Council

The Malden City Council is the legislative branch of Malden government and consists of 11 members elected by the voters, one elected from each of the eight wards (Ward Councillors) and three elected city-wide (Councillors-at-Large). All terms of office are two years. The Council:

  • Sets policy
  • Adopts ordinances, orders and resolutions
  • Reviews and approves the City's annual budget
  • Approves or confirms appropriations, appointments and other matters proposed by the Mayor
  • Performs many other legislative-related tasks

Each year the Council selects one of its members to serve as Council President who presides over the weekly Council meetings, decides committee assignments and assures that information and Council discussion takes place in a fair and democratic way. The Council establishes its own rules, which are governed by the Roberts Rules of Order.
