Licenses from the City Clerk’s Office

Business Certificate

Before filling out and submitting an application for a business certificate, a Certificate of Occupancy must be obtained from the Building Department (781-397-7030).

Business owners may come in to the City Clerk’s Office with the Certificate of Occupancy and a photo ID to file a business certificate. Business certificates must be filed by the owner of the business.

Completed applications may also be mailed in with a copy of the Certificate of Occupancy, and check or money order to the City Clerk’s Office. The bottom of the business certificate needs to be notarized before submitting.

Fee: $35 (cash, check, or money order accepted as payment) Business certificates expire every 4 years.

Canvassing License

Fee: $100 per person

Applications must be accompanied by a completed CORI Request Form, $1,000 surety bond, and a 2”X2” picture of applicant from the shoulders up.

Licenses from the City Council

Note: All applications for all of the following licenses must be accompanied by a completed Tax Compliance Certification as per M.G.L. Ch. 62C Section 49A.

There is an at least 4 week review process by the City Council and License Committee for new license applications as well as renewals.

Amusement Machine License

Fees: $100 application fee + $50 per machine for the first 25 machines, then $25 for each additional machine.

Please note that city ordinance Sec. 6.08.010 of the R.O of 2020 requires that every establishment post a sign on the premises, so as to be clearly visible to users, a notice containing the following statement: “This machine is licensed for recreational use only.  Any gambling associated with the use of this machine will result in revocation of the license for its operation.”

Fees: $25 for the first lane, then $5 for each additional lane.

Christmas Tree Sales License

Applications must be submitted by October 1st to allow for City Council and License Committee review before the start of sales during holiday season.

Class I, II, III Licenses

Fees: $200 License fee + $100 Inspection fee, $50 Application fee for new applicants (Class II “Grandfathered” Licenses are exempt from Inspection fee)

Applications must be accompanied by the following:

  • A Certified plot plan approved by Building Commissioner AND Fire Department
  • A CORI Report issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • A copy of your $25,000 surety bond
  • A copy of your dealer plate registration from the RMV

Class I, II, III License Application

Exterior Vending Machine License Application

Note: Exterior vending machines may operate only between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Each exterior vending machine must be equipped with a timed electronic device that will provide for the automatic disabling of the machine each evening at the close of approved hours of operation and remain as such until the following operation day. (MMC 6.20.040)
