[ARCHIVED] Update on COVID-19

The City of Malden is actively monitoring the evolving health issues caused by COVID-19 and is working closely with public health officials. Since last week Malden has an additional 37 cases which brings our number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 1453.

The Department of Public Health (DPH) issues a weekly report on positive cases in each city and town. Based on the average daily cases per 100,000 residents, each city has been designated as a “red,” higher risk; “yellow,” moderate risk; or “green,” lower risk community. Although Malden remains among the communities in the “yellow,” moderate risk category, the average daily rate of cases has increased from 5.5 to 7.4. This increase is a stark reminder that we still have significant levels of community transmission taking place.

Malden’s parks, playgrounds and athletic fields are open, but basketball courts will be closed in order to limit activities that encourage groups to gather and that make social distancing difficult to maintain. All visitors to parks, over the age of 2, must wear a face covering or mask when they cannot maintain 6 feet of distance between themselves and others. Additionally, after using playground equipment or visiting any public space, users should always wash their hands or use hand sanitizer.

Outdoor athletic fields are open for certain organized sports, but activity must be scheduled through the Recreation Department. There are group limitations and other requirements that can be found at www.cityofmalden.org/321/recreation or calling the Recreation Department at 781-397-7168.

Please remain vigilant by maintaining social distancing at all times, limiting private gatherings, wearing a mask and being cautious while in parks and public spaces.
