Under a 2017 Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) Consent Order, the City of Malden is required to complete 150 full lead line replacements per year. For 2020, Malden’s Engineering Department has reported the replacement of 273 lead water service lines. Mayor Gary Christenson commended Glenn Calla in the City Engineering Department and John DeSantis in the Water Department for their commitment in moving the replacement program forward. “I want to thank them for remaining proactive with this critical initiative despite this year’s challenges due to COVID-19,” said Mayor Christenson. The City of Malden’s Lead Pipe Replacement Program includes scheduled pipe replacement by city crews as well as city contractors, with the goal being to expedite the elimination of all lead service lines in the shortest possible amount of time.
