Boston Wounded Vet Run Draws Large Crowds

Annual Wounded Vet Run drew large crowds

The 9th Annual Boston Wounded Vet Motorcycle Run kicked off in Revere at the Boston Harley-Davidson store and ended with a very large gathering in Malden. More than 2,000 motorcycles rode through the cities of Revere, Saugus, Wakefield, Melrose, and Stoneham pausing at many points along the way for cheering observers. The ride concluded at Anthony’s of Malden where thousands gathered to enjoy food, beverages and several vendors. Retired U.S. Navy Seal Robert O’Neill was the featured speaker and shared many stories from his career and training. Additionally, there were nine honorees including a Navajo Code Talker, a 91 year-old World War II Veteran, and Veterans from the Vietnam War, Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Mayor Gary Christenson greeted attendees and announced that Malden Rotary and Cambridge 5K collaborated to donate $10,000 from this year’s Malden Half-Marathon run in March in support of their efforts!

The annual run which began in 2011 was inspired by Corporal Vincent Mannion-Brodeur. In 2008 Army Private Mannion-Brodeur was severely wounded in the Iraq War, suffering a devastating brain injury along with other injuries. He endured many years of surgeries and countless hours of rehabilitation. Proceeds from the first ride event created a handicapped accessible living space for him in his family’s Cape Cod home. Vinnie, who has served as an inspiration for so many around the nation is a recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

The Annual Wounded Vet Motorcycle Run fundraising efforts raise thousands of dollars to support housing modifications of New England's most severely wounded Veterans. Funds are also used in improve the quality of life of disabled veterans. The event has been recognized as one of the largest and most organized motorcycle fundraising rides.
