Malden Honors its Veterans on Memorial Day 2019

Thomas R. Moore Jr. Square Dedication-4

In preparation of Memorial Day 2019, Director of Veterans Services Kevin Jarvis along with students from the YWCA, YMCA, Malden Teen Enrichment Center, the Forestdale and Ferryway Schools and Malden Catholic High School spent many hours placing more than 10,000 flags at the graves of Malden’s veterans in the City’s four cemeteries as well as at veteran monuments throughout the city. The Malden Democratic City Committee also assisted with the efforts.

Malden High School kicked off the holiday weekend early with an annual tribute by students in honor of our Nation’s Veterans on Thursday, May 23rd at Malden High School. The ceremony included a selection of patriotic songs and speeches. The event was led by Choral Arts Director Todd Cole.

On Memorial Day morning, Veterans Services Director Kevin Jarvis, Mayor Gary Christenson, State Senator Jason Lewis and members of the City Council and School Committee joined family and friends of Lance Corporal Thomas R. Moore, Jr. for the dedication of the Memorial Square in his memory at the corner of Belmont and Ferry Streets for his service in the Vietnam War. Lance Corporal Moore who served in the United States Marine Corps was out on patrol with the 2nd Platoon, G Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division when he was killed near Da Nang, Vietnam on February 20, 1970. A 1967 graduate of Malden High School, LCPL Moore was just 20 years old at the time of his death. He ended each letter sent home to his family in Malden with “Pray for me” and the last letter his mother received was dated February 19, 1970. Two of the men who served with John in Vietnam, John Boiros from Taunton, MA and Dennis Best from Ocean City, NJ as well as nearly a dozen of his Malden High School classmates, including Ward 2 City Councillor Paul Condon were in attendance. Dennis Best spoke about his experiences serving with Tom in Vietnam before he was tragically killed. John lost both his legs in the war and urged everyone in attendance to never forget the sacrifices of those who served. Also offering remarks was Tom’s niece Erica Moore from Somerville.

The annual Memorial Day Parade lifted off at the corner of Salem, Ferry, and Main Streets, and continued north on Main Street to Forest Dale Cemetery. Veterans groups, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, School Bands, church groups and many others participated. The Ceremony at Forest Dale Cemetery opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by the Scouts. This Year’s Grand Marshal was Mr. Herbert “Bob” Goodwin, a combat veteran of the Korean War where he served for more than a year. Mr. Goodwin enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 6, 1951 and was honorably discharged on May 19, 1953. During the war, Mr. Goodwin participated in three military campaigns and for his service he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze battle stars. Born in Everett, Mr. Goodwin is a long-time resident of Malden. In 1953 he married his wife of 65 years Joanna as soon as he returned home from the Korean War. The Goodwins have lived in the same Edgeworth home since they married and where they raised their four children.

Following the service at Forest Dale Cemetery, the parade wound its way back to the corner of Ferry, Salem and Main, where there was a brief pause as a wreath was laid at the WWI and WWII Memorials in honor of Malden High School students who served in those wars.
